I wouldn't have much insight into this. The only thing I can say is the media made a big deal out of the gas pressure being 12 times normal. The gas pressure was reported to be 6 psi versus the normal 0.5 psi. 6 psi is not a lot of pressure. For comparison, the pressure in an automobile tire is about 32 psi and if you deflate it to 6 psi there isn't much. Atmospheric pressure is 15 psi. So in either case (6 psi or 0.5 psi), the gas pressure is some fraction over atmospheric (because they are measuring using atmospheric as the reference, not a vacuum as the reference). Bottom line, I don't think the gas pressure is what caused the explosion. It was something else.

Let's say someone hacked into the system and was able to figure out how to bypass a regulator that reduced pressure in a main gas line from 6 psig to 0.5 psig before it entered a residential area (and I have no clue as to whether a bypass is even possible or what the pressures in a main gas line would be). So it enters a residential neighborhood at 6 psig. That condition might be able to persist for some time. The absolute pressure is really only 20.7 psia (not a lot, water pressure entering a residence is generally required to be over 50 psia or 35 psig).

The problem is what if a gas line leaks. Now the leakage rate is in fact 12X normal because the gradient the gas is working against is the atmosphere. So while a gas line may exist for some time at 6 psi, if a line breaks and starts to leak, there is the potential for a much larger explosion.

All this comes from my head - could be wrong.

This makes sense to me. The only part I would question is the hacking
-- that information would be so "explosive" that it would have have
"leaked" by now if true. I would guess something much more prosaic --
a software bug.

Reading the above, my thought was that Robert Bork's comments of 30 years ago have come to fruition. Of course, it's not out of the ordinary that I thought this is another canary in the coal mine of the descent into a new dark age. What's unusual, and this is typically not the case in similar situations, is that enough people in the news media think so too that something to that effect actually got published.

When reports surfaced this summer that the US birth rate fell to 1.77, the media gave every explanation they could think of besides the obvious one - that the decline of the birthrate to under 2 in the hegemon is a sign of collapse.
