** 30-May-2023 World View: Some tv news stories
Here some late news bulletins from cable
tv news channels:
**** Serbia and Kosovo
The conflict between Serbia and Kosovo
has been little reported, but is growing
in intensity, especially as Nato
peacekeepers have been killed.
One thing I've learned over the last
decade is that the level of hatred among
the people in the Balkans is GINORMOUS
(to use this increasingly popular word).
I've thought for years that a new
European war in the Balkans is
inevitable soon.
**** China Covid resurgence
China is expecting a new resurgence of a
new variation of Wuhan Coronavirus
(Covid-19) in June, resulting in new
lockdowns. In the meantime, China's
economy is doing poorly. Unfortunately,
the Chinese Communists might become
desperate and respond to this with some
kind of military action.
**** AI Explosion
The big financial news is that chip
stocks are exploding upward. The trend
is being led by Nvidia, which provides
the most sophisticated chips for AI
applications.
Meanwhile, the Center for AI Safety has
issued a statement the AI development
could lead to human extinction.
**** Debt limit crisis
For weeks, the news has been filled with
hysterical warnings that America will
default on its debts because of the
intransigence of the Republicans or
Democrats, depending on your point of
view. We've been hearing about how
politicians around the world have been
alternately horrified at us or laughing
at the spectacle.
I look at it quite differently. In
those other countries, some autocratic
leader would make an edict to settle the
issue without debate. But in America,
the brilliant US Constitution forces
exactly the kind of dramatic debate and
compromise that we've seen.
**** Russia's war in Ukraine
Russia is stepping up attacks on Kiev by
masses of Iranian-made kamikaze drones,
hoping to force the Ukrainians to
surrender, something not likely to
happen.
Moscow has been attacked by a large
number of exploding drones. Ukraine
claims they have nothing to do with
them.
There is no chance whatsoever of a
negotiated peace in this war. It's
still my expectation that it will expand
to a larger war, and it may link to the
Kosovo-Serbia conflict.
