When the Serbs tried to enter the city, they had to fight house to house. Each one was fiercely defended and they took too many casualties and had to withdraw. One neighborhood installed an anti-tank mine in the road which blew up the first tank in the column. Although that was the only mine,
the Serbs didn't know that and abandoned their assault in that neighborhood. Each yard became a garden. Potatoes were a common item to be grown and traded. One of the translators was a new police officer when the civil war broke out. Everyone in the station got together and stated their allegiance: Croation, Serbian, Bosnian: Catholic, Muslim or Christian Orthodox. Then they went off into their own groups. So there was no more police force. They were friends/co-workers one day and enemies the next. 20 years after the war and I could still see the bullet holes and RPG explosion holes in the buildings. I saw the Sarajevo roses in the streets. Those were the craters where mortars, rockets and artillery exploded. Burned out housed in neighbor hoods where that family was the wrong religion and was chased out or executed. The house and property was never repaired or inhabited again. Land mines where everywhere in the countryside. A guy and his son were killed by one the month I left. I saw many people with missing legs. Victims of land mines. Mass graves are still being found and dug up. Some with 10 people. Some with 100+ people.
Still the Americans sleep.
