Nagorno-Karabakh, inhabited mostly by ethnic Armenians until 2023
Tens of thousands have fled their ancestral home rather than submitting to rule by Baku.

Baku, the Absheron Peninsula, and the Caspian Sea are classified as the most environmentally-devastated places on Earth.
This environmental damage includes severe air, soil, and water pollution.

Though the region came under the influence of Islam, the Zoroastrians probably did not completely disappear. Noted 10th century geographer Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Farisi al-Istakhri (popularly known by his mononym Estakhri) wrote that ‘fire worshippers’ lived not far from Baku in a place what is now known as Ateshgah.
The flame used to burn naturally till 1969 till rampant gas extraction by the Soviets emptied the reserves.
The fuel for the fire that now burns is fed from a gas pipeline coming all the way from Baku.

Ethnic cleansing in our time in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Just over a year ago, the government of Azerbaijan using purported “eco-activists” launched a blockade of the Lachin Corridor, the only road between Armenia and the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Despite warnings, the world largely treated the act as innocuous. Nine months later, however, nearly all 120,000 ethnic Armenian inhabitants have been ethnically cleansed from the disputed territory. And the Azerbaijani forces carried it out in only five days.

Azerbaijani forces kidnapped Mels in Nagorno-Karabakh in December 2020 and for 10 months tortured him with bats and chains, starved him, and forced him to chant “Karabakh is Azerbaijan” and “Glory to the president of Azerbaijan.” Unaware if he was alive, Mels’ grandmother prayed for his return. The Red Cross eventually facilitated this, but the day he came home, 30 pounds lighter and unrecognizable, died.
