2. Supply of Raw and Custom Lipids

During the height of the pandemic in 2020–2022, global demand for the four essential lipid ingredients—specifically PEGylated lipids, helper phospholipids, and cholesterol—skyrocketed. Western supply chains faced massive bottlenecks, forcing pharmaceutical companies to source these individual chemical components from global biochemical companies, including prominent Chinese suppliers.

Companies like SINOPEG and Biochempeg became crucial massive-scale suppliers of high-purity PEG (polyethylene glycol) derivatives and customized structural lipids used by global vaccine developers.These Chinese companies did not make the vaccine itself, but rather shipped the bulk chemical ingredients to Western factories where the final LNP-mRNA encapsulation took place.3. China’s Domestic mRNA VaccinesChina eventually developed its own domestic mRNA COVID-19 vaccines (such as those by Walvax and Abogen Biosciences), which utilized Chinese-designed and Chinese-manufactured LNPs. However, these vaccines were used regionally and were never authorized or distributed in the American market.
