But I'm certainly not opposed to an AI that could DO that, as it's easily contained to "a mission".

Aloha nui ko'u hoaloha! :) <shaka!>
For the foreseeable future there will need to be ground units in which case miniaturized drones optimized for collecting only image and sound data and aggregating that data will prove useful. The aggregation techniques would be AI based in nature. Here is a excerpt from "Neural and Adaptive Systems" that illustrates this point and ties it into the broader point of the importance of information and math moving forward:
Engineering is a discipline that builds physical systems from human dreams, reinventing the physical world around us. In this respect it transcends physics, which has the passive role of explaining the world, and also mathematics, which stops at the edge of physical reality. Engineering design is like a gigantic Lego construction, where each piece is a subsystem grounded in its physical or mathematical principles. The role of the engineer is to first develop the blueprint of the dream through specifications and then to look for the pieces that fit the blueprint. Obviously, the pieces cannot be put together at random, since each has its own principles, so it is mandatory that the scientist or the engineer first learn the principles attached to each piece and then specify the interface. Normally, this study is done using the scientific method. When the system is physical, we use the principles of physics, and when it is software, we use the principles of mathematics.

The scientific method has been highly successful in engineering, but let us evaluate it in broad terms. First, engineering design requires the availability of a model for each subsystem. Second, when the number of pieces increases the interactions among the subsystems increase exponentially. Fundamental research will continue to provide a steady flux of new physical and mathematical principles (provided the present trend of reduced federal funding for fundamental science is reversed), but the exponential growth of interactions required for larger and more sophisticated systems is harder to control. In fact, at this point in time, we simply do not have a clear vision of how to handle complexity in the long term. But there are two more factors that present major challenges: the autonomous interaction of systems with the environment and the optimality of the design. We will
discuss these now.

Knowledge and Power: The information theory of capitalism and how it is revolutionizing our world
Transcending the laws of physics by the laws of information is not a pie-in-the-sky idea. It has been happening in the most dynamic sectors of the economy since the last century. This same step-by-step transcendence of the physical by the informational, of matter by idea, has powered all economic development through all of history and before. In previous eras, this process was less obvious because the power of information was manifested in harnessing the laws of physics rather than in transcending them. From the wheel to the Roman arch to the fragile wings lifting off the sand at Kitty Hawk, man used physics to ease the burdens of matter, to control, guide, or support more with less, to enliven matter with mind. In the information age, it is physics itself that is subdued. In the early 1990s, Qualcomm was the center of that effort.
Programming the Universe
All physical systems register information, and when they evolve dynamically in time, they transform and process that information. ... The natural dynamics of a physical system can be thought of as a computation in which a bit not only registers a 0 or 1 but acts as an instruction: 0 can mean "do this" and 1 can mean "do that." The significance of a bit depends not just on its value but on how that value affects other bits over time, as part of the continued information processing that makes up the dynamical evolution of the universe.
The conventional history of the universe pays great attention to energy: How much is there? where is it? What is it doing? By contrast, in the story of the universe told in this book, the primary actor in the physical history of the universe is information. Ultimately, information and energy play complementary roles in the universe: Energy makes physical systems do things. Information tells them what to do.

In this particular passage I saw parallels to my "Informational perspective" post in which I speculated the prophet generation acts to extract information from the environment by trying things no other generation would dare try. The prophet generation = the information, the hero generation = the energy.

-------

Information is governed by the laws of mathematics and matter by the laws of physics. This is important because it means matter has far more constraints than does information which is why it is able to "transcend" matter. Because math and information have fewer constraints (or more degrees of freedom to operate) it creates a greater combinatorial space to transverse (more room to explore) hence a much greater need for creativity to imagine different approaches.

Matter/energy flows with entropy.

Intelligence (information) flows with negentropy.

Entropy flow amplifies negentropy flow.

..What!?

One unit of entropy flow creates two (or at least >1) units of "potential" negentropy flow, and when there's enough "suction" in the local "tropy" space, intelligence/information is created which "solves" the local "problem" in a (usually) somewhat efficient way, depending on local "tropy turbulence" levels, of course.

..So, how does this "suction" thing work?

See examples of "stuff wanting to stay alive",.. or at least relevant,.. like Blacksploitation Movies, such as that panthers flick.
