The Obama administration clarified an earlier Obama public statement regarding China attacking Japan over the disputed Islands.
When Obama said the U.S. would defend Japan, if Japan was attacked by China over the disputed Islands, Obama DID NOT mean the U.S. would use U.S. military forces to defend Japan from China.
Apparently Obama was speaking of a kinder, gentler, 21st century, type of defense where the U.S. military is not part of that defense.
So far this new 21st century type of U.S. defense has been very popular in Iran, Syria and Russia; Not so much in Ukraine, Poland, the Baltic States, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, nor Israel.

President Barack Obama has reassured Japan that the U.S. will abide by its commitment to help defend the country if China seizes a disputed group of islands, but made clear that he IS NOT setting a red line that would result in the U.S. attacking Chinese forces.
