I am not so sure it is irrational. Muslims are expanding their population in many countries and when they get a majority implementing Sharia law, and driving out the minority. Having a Victory Mosque teaching more people to hate Americans just 2 blocks from Ground Zero is not exactly helping to maintain the American way of life. You are even predicting a clash of civilizations genocidal war with Muslims. It seems at least some concern about Islam might be rational.

Pakistan has been much more victimized by al-Qaeda and Taliban violence than almost any other country in the world, including the US.[...]

Exactly John's point, I think. Because of your perception of government policy in Pakistan, you disclaim sympathy for little children and old ladies who have lost their homes in a natural disaster and are starving by the side of the road.

Sooner or later a big hurricane will sweep away the ex-pats' seaside homes in Anguilla. Maybe next week. When that happens, would you like some food?

I was referring to troubles with the Taliban not natural disasters. The problem is that Islam is well designed to take over the world and Muslim populations support this goal. The fear is Islamophobia. If it were just Pakistan's government we would be talking about Pakiphobia.

Few voices are saying stop all mosque building in the US. Rational people are saying let's not build a mosque on a site that was partially attacked on 9/11 (landing gear from Atta's plane crashed through the roof of the former Burlington Coat Factory at 51 Park Ave) in the name of Islam. Such a mosque would be used as a huge propaganda tool by the Islamists to further their goals and would be a greater recruitment tool than 100 Gitmos, i.e. recruitment overseas not necessarily in NYC. And this view is not strictly American:

I do not think that the majority of Muslims want to build a monument or a place of worship that tomorrow may become a source of pride for the terrorists and their Muslim followers, nor do they want a mosque that will become a shrine for the haters of Islam...

You do an excellent job of putting news stories in to GD context, but on this issue I do not believe that opposition to a Ground Zero Mosque is irrational xenophobia, but rather intelligent recognition of the transparent ploy by the radical Islamist to plant their flag at the site of their victory over the Great Satan. We cannot forget that even though we do not regard this as a war with Islam, the Islamist do. They are only targeting us first because the Western powers are the principle structure that prevents them from taking over Islamic countries and imposing their 7th century views on the population.

Like the old joke, its not a phobia if they really are out to get you.

Some people are concerned about Islam taking over the world and having Sharia law everywhere. Some people don't like shooting widows for having sex or selling 9 year old girls to men like they were slaves. Is their concern irrational? If you extrapolate the trends of the last 30 years into the future, it kind of looks like they will take over the world. Should we just all start getting ready to live under Sharia law? Or as John says, just expect a world war where lots of Nukes (US, Russia, UK, France, India, Israel) are against lots of Muslims? No cause for concern?

If the concern is rational, what word should we use instead of Islamophobia?

If you are not afraid, when a killer enters your house to do harm to you and your family, then you have no clue what the function of fear is. It doesn't matter whether you are armed or not, that is just how you plan to channel that fear. It is irrational to ignore that which threatens you.

Also I am saying that this reaction is not out of fear, but rational thinking on the clear (to those who have ears, hear) terrorist ploy to plant their flag. For all the liberal claptrap about how Bush didn't understand the enemy, it is clear from the liberal knee jerk reaction on this issue that they have no idea with whom we are dealing. Terrorist Jihadist that stone people to death do not fear or respect your "tolerance". They are laughing at your absurdity and taking every inch you give with nothing in returned.
