Re: 3-May-10 News -- EU announces another non-bailout bailout
Another interesting speculation is this: What if the BP oil rig explosion had occurred during the Bush administration? Good point. If Bush had publicly announced increased offshore drilling a couple of months before this disaster, there would be no end to the conspiracy theories. One thing is sure,...

Re: 3-May-10 News -- EU announces another non-bailout bailout
Thanks John for posting the link to the May Day riot in the otherwise laid-back town of Santa Cruz. Can anyone imagine what the press and outrage would look like if Tea Partiers had vandalized 18 businesses during a demonstration? It would have been the second coming of the brown shirts. But if ille...

Re: Financial topics
Excellent post, Grey Badger. I've got a 1920s era house in western Washington, and for me investing in energy efficiency and cutting my utility bills has been a much better investment than the stock market in terms of cutting expenditure. So far I've cut my water and electric bills by almost half (f...

Re: 22-Apr-10 News -- Controversy over Arizona immigration law
A nation protecting itself and its citizens by enforcing Immigration laws (already on the books) against ILLEGAL intruders is "xenophobia that leads to wars?" I agree with your sentiment, but I think John is right here. Whether you call the trend xenophobia or self-preservation, it is increasing. I...

Re: Financial topics
You say that John Williams is "a respected PhD economist." So did he post this graph because he doesn't understand exponential growth, or did he do it to intentionally deceive? Is he a moron or a liar? The non-log chart makes a strong point. There was no net inflation until the Federal Reserve act ...

Re: 9-Apr-10 News -- Greece crisis worsens -- again
If insurance costs 435K per 10M insured, that would mean that investors on average think there's a 4.35% chance of Greece defaulting on 100% of its debt within a year. Or I suppose it could also mean they think there's a 21.5% chance of them defaulting and investors getting 80 cents on the dollar. E...

Re: Financial topics
"Is it possible we will see inflation in some areas of the economy and deflation in others?" In my experience, that's mostly what we have seen. Anything driven by Moore's law continues to fall in price. Anything that competes with Chinese imports has fallen in price so far, although that may change ...

Re: Financial topics
John, here's a detailed argument for hyperinflation by John Williams, a respected PhD economist that worked advising industry for many years. He now produces a set of alternative measures of unemployment, inflation, and GDP growth, largely using current BLS raw data, but calculated using older formu...

Re: 3-Apr-10 News-Medvedev urges 'crueler' methods v terrorists
Back to 9/11? The day that our $500 billion/year military couldn't scramble a single fighter jet on the eastern seaboard in two hours? Hopefully that was a low point in American preparedness. Because it really showed what a sack of puss our leaders were. But even if they've gotten no better, we don'...

You're angry at me for pointing out that islamofacism is a boogeyman. That's been the response of most islamofacistphobes that I've seen. You guys don't deal in facts, you just like to tell campfire stories to each other and then get mad when someone turns on the light.
