Re: Basics of Generational Theory

The reference to "Nine Nations" rings a bell, because the massive anti-immigration sentiment the media are making so much of is concentrated in the heart of MexAmerica. I have a friend from Eastern Oregon who keeps pointing out to me that rural blue-collar Boomers her neck of the woods did not live ...

Re: 21-May-10 News -- S. Korea accuses North of sinking warship

We do have experience with formerly imprisoned citizens emerging, blinking, into the sunlight. Let's look at East Germany right after the wall fell for a parallel. It might not be exact, but if you assume that Germany's Crisis ended in 1945 and Korea's in 1952, then it's right on the nose. If Big Br...

Re: 29-Apr-10 News-Desperate Europeans try to save euro

I'm not an economist, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn before and I know right now, whether it's inflation or deflation, we're headed for a world of hurt. Just trying to figure out what to do... buy gold, hoard cash, sell land, keep land, throw my hands up in the air, move overseas or all of the above...

Re: Financial topics

I should have asked about it. The short answer is that in a house this age, retrofits can be truly expensive. But since the new water heater is already in, I will live with second best. But thanks for the reminder.

Re: Financial topics

I would like to change the subject briefly to tell you what I've been doing and why. I guess you could call it an investment. My house - the realtor claimed - dates back to 1950. An electrical contractor digging in the back of the fuse box (now replaced) found an inspection ticket dated 1939. This p...

Re: 27-Apr-10 News -- Greece's bonds are hammered, 13% yields

And the DOW dropped about 100 points this morning following the announcement that the Greek bonds are "junk." This came as a surprise to them? Haven't they been following the story? If so, weren't they expecting this?

Or were they waiting for someone to pull a rabbit out of their hats?

Re: Financial topics

You say that John Williams is "a respected PhD economist." So did he post this graph because he doesn't understand exponential growth, or did he do it to intentionally deceive? Is he a moron or a liar? The non-log chart makes a strong point. There was no net inflation until the Federal Reserve act ...

Re: Financial topics

The perfect investment deal dropped into my lap yesterday. That is -- I need to get my entire water system redone. (It's as old as I am, and the sewer line may be a WWII ersatz stuff called Orange Bird) and the Dow topped 11,000 for two days running. Unload the bottom performers and/or risky-in-a-re...
