Re: 18-Jan-13 WV-Did France kick a hornet's nest with Mali?

Some analyst on a French radio said that the Touaregs from Northern Mali had, for a short time, allied themselves to Ansar-al-Dine terrorists (or similar ones) moved by their desire to secede from the rest of Mali (taking advantage of the present weakness of the government in Bamako) but that they a...

That speech of Reagan that you quote is truly amazing, it's so amazing and moving (in the good sense, no tears there, as you said) that you hardly believe that it could have been uttered by a politician. And I imagine that all the Americans who listened to it at the time felt that they indeed lived ...

"This is a good time to repeat my expectation that in the coming Clash of Civilizations world war, Iran will be allied with India, Israel, Russia and the West, while the Sunni Arab countries will be allied with Pakistan and China." Hi John, This morning I was asking myself this question about the mi...

Re: 25-Aug-12 World View -- Fatal bridge collapse in China

After reading this in yesterday's post: "There have been recent rumors that China is testing a new intercontinental ballistic missile to strike any city in the United States", I was sad and a bit depressed. But when I read this today: "...shoddy construction is a pervasive problem throughout China. ...

About France: "It lives in the past, and even when it knows that it's in trouble, it refuses to change."

That is so true!

Re: 15-Aug-12 World View -- Rioting in Amiens, France

"It's thought that poverty is the underlying cause of the riots, especially among immigrants from Africa." I'm sorry to contradict but that's not quite true. Idleness is the underlying cause of the riots. The suburbs of the big cities have been inundated with millions of euros of public money over t...

Sarkozy talks well but he acts badly. Oh yes, he's a great talker and people fall for it at first.

By the way, John, which generation does he belong to, the Gen-Xers? How is he typical of his generation?

Re: 21-Apr-12 World View-Russia's relationship w/ Syria deep

Unfortunately French people on the whole don't like the USA. Quite irrationnaly, I must add. So much so that a French writer wrote a book about it in which he analyses the phenomenon. It's called "L'obsession anti-américaine" and the author is Jean-François Revel. But maybe you've heard about it or ...
