Here's a nice chart to give perspective of where we may be on our journey to the bottom....

Re: Financial topics

John, I read with interest your article about complicity of politicians et al in the financial system failure. What is your view of people who now hold common stock in banks? A) They get wiped out? B) They increase their net worth, because the government is now a major shareholder (AKA fascism) or C...

Re: Financial topics

Does anyone else have this foreboding feeling, or is it just me? I fele like we are about to be in for something totally different, from what we have become accustomed to. An analogy: Water is a solid from absolute zero (about -459 F) to about 32 F. Then in a matter of a few degrees, something total...

Re: Financial topics

Tobyguy said: What's another 3000-4000 DOW points when we've fallen over 7000 already? Suppose you have a friend who put $10,000 in the stock market when the Dow was at 14,000. Suppose his investment is now $5,000, after the market dropped 50% to 7000. Suppose your friend has had enough, and gets o...

Re: transition to new technology

examples: 900 megawatts of windpower (right now, not in the future), in Colorado, replacing coal fired power plants (if the wind is blowing.) Displaces railroads (for hauling the coal), mines (for fuel supply), possible effects on the tax base (where the coal fired power plants are located), plus al...

transition to new technology

First, a disclosure: my job is in an "old" technolgy area. That said, people are dumping their old technology in favor of new technology that is cheaper, more portable, and easier to replace -- even disposable. I see it in the job where I am working. When the cost to consumers of the old technology ...

Re: Financial topics

There is an exchange traded fund symbol FAZ that tracks 3X the inverse of a banking index. FAZ declined about 20% today. This indicates someone thinks the banks are going to come out well in the short term. Am I missing something, or is this a case of buy the rumor, (bailout) and later, sell the new...

Re: Financial topics

OK, I'll ask.

What's the difference between insolvent and illiquid?

My guess is insolvent is, you are broke; illiquid is you are not broke, but nobody wants to trade with you because there is not anything you can exchange that is mutually possible.

Re: You Have The Investing Advantage

Freddyv says: It looks like we are in a "relief rally" phase where we can expect the market to consolidate a bit and take a breather before the next crisis hits. I feel like Odysseus tied to the mast, as his ship passed the Sirens. The rally the first trading day of 2009 was very seductive, but my ...

Re: Who's to blame -- Generation-Xers or Boomers?

In my opinion, the most disruptive organization is one which has a "silent" as a CEO. Many of you may be able to identify companies or other organizations which laid off workers, re-organized into the ground, and focused on useless "Process" to the benefit of "silent's" golden parachutes and leaving...
