Re: President Barack's news conference 2/9/2009

I didn't see it, but David Kaiser did on the T4T forums and had the complete opposite reaction . As for Millies, there's very little chance that this will have much of an effect. Obama's got at least 8-9 months (though I'd double it) worth of cushioning where he can do very little wrong in my gener...

Re: Generational Crises and Methods for Evaluation

Matt, This methodology for evaluating a war to determine whether it is a crisis war seems thorough. I've run it against a few possibilities and it seems to do a reasonably effective job - avoiding what intuitively seem like false positives and catching those that seem obviously to be actual positive...

Re: Presidential Election

That said, unless we can imagine and develop an effective replacement for some form of organized government, it would certainly be to our mutual benefit for more of the "best and brightest" to be paying important roles in that set of functions - rather than, for example, "Brownie". Ah, but you seem...

Re: Presidential Election

Don't make me take back my "sane discussion" comment haha. John, jgreenhall, was just joking when he said boomer bullshit. One thing I've found while chatting online is that subtle tones do not translate well into an online format and more often than not cause offense where none was intended. Natch...

Re: Presidential Election

To expand on that: my Xer daughter has been deeply involved in mutual self-help networks from the day she got married and possibly before. Is this private? I'd say so. Is it selfish? She certainly gets a lot of benefit out of it, and so do the others in her networks. (I'm in one myself. Freecycle. ...

Re: Presidential Election

One of the key tasks for the turning of Xers is to move them from private (and private sector) activities into service. I strongly disagree with your implication that "private" and "service" are mutually exclusive. Can you provide more info on why you strongly disagree? I'm simply trying to make th...

Re: Presidential Election

Dear Jordan, One of the worst things that people do to make the crisis worse is to believe and behave as if the crisis can be avoided, or averted, or diluted, or shortened, or minimized in impact. That's the attitude that left millions of people unprepared for the 2005 tsunami or hurricane Katrina....

Re: Presidential Election

As always, great insights, interesting ideas, and sane discussion, but if only they were not tainted with end of the world scenarios of WWIII. Agreed. First, *nothing* is inevitable (not even the heat death of the Universe). Second, even if WWIII is probabilistically very likely, the whole point an...

Re: Presidential Election

I, for one, am glad this thing is over. I think of Obama as a Boomer, not an Xer. But, even assuming that he is an Xer, remember that Xer pragmatism is only as good (or evil) as the desired goals. Xers putting their skills to use can accomplish great deeds, and they can also accomplish some pretty ...

WebLong - what to expect from an Obama Presidency

I'm taken by the fact that John's weblog today is significantly bereft of the archetypes from S&H. The biggest difference between McCain and Obama is that McCain is Silent generation and Obama is GenerationX. If Generational theory holds any water, then we should be able to draw conclusions from the...
