No, nothing like the Singularity has occurred, and we're years away
from it occurring. I stick to my estimate of 2030.

The effort to develop intelligent weapons systems, capable of
operating autonomously and making decisions on their own of which
people to kill, is becoming increasingly important in many countries
today.

The Singularity is not a point in time when suddenly all the computers
in the world are smarter than humans. It's a point in time that
begins a years-long process where super-intelligent computers become
more and more common, and take over roles previously held by humans,
and do them better and more intelligently than humans. At some point,
say 10-30 years after the Singularity, the computers may decide on
their own to take over, but that won't happen for a while.

So the most likely scenario is that WW III will be fought by humans,
but with a big chunk of the fighting being fought by autonomous
intelligent weapons.

What could possibly go wrong?

And it's worth mentioning that the people at Google seem perfectly
happy doing AI research in China, to help the Chinese government
develop weapons systems that will be used to kill us and people in
other countries around the world, but they consider themselves too
morally superior to help our own government defend us.

When China and the US go to war, I wonder which side Google will
be on?
The people at Google will either be "suddenly converted" or somesuch, well before hostilities, or within the next couple of months.

I suspect that our Johnster thinks that the singularity has already occurred, actually. I think that is likely true as well, though it's being rather well hidden behind thick walls of "scientific" jargon.

..and the "Johnster" thing is just my goofy way of bringing our "fearless leader" (as it were) into the friendly fellowship that is the cordial group we call "us" around here. :) No slight intended whatsoever!

BUT,.. once again, while the MASS of the competing sides (China et al VS The West et al) may clamor for war, there will NOT be a REAL abjectly genocidal war until the ELITES of the competing sides are assured that "their" AI (and it's infrastructure) can survive in even the worst possible case scenario.

..what could POSSIBLY go wrong with that? <chuckle!>

And yes, I do find conjecturing about this to be most amusing. What will happen will happen regardless of my "input" or reaction to it's run up and launch. Enjoy your place in history, people. It's the only one you can possibly have!
