The other aspect of this, besides soil, is weather extremes. This year it was in the upper 90s on March 15. During the early morning hours of March 17, it was 29 degrees. As the cold air came in, winds were brisk, which didn't help. Many gardeners in this area lost all of their cold sensitive crops or they were badly damaged.

This is when it can be advantageous to be working on a small scale. I covered my tomatoes with blankets (they had to be put over stakes so that the blankets wouldn't touch the plants). Only 3 were damaged out of 28. In an open field, everything would have been lost.

It is possible to put infrastructure such as hoop houses in to avoid these outcomes, but I would prefer not to be "advertising" my garden plot while the new dark age is incoming. At present, it can't be seen by anybody, but putting a hoop house out there would make it highly visible. We have visitors here from time to time. The instructions I've given is the garden plot is not to be discussed with or shown to any visitors.

It's only April 9, but it's looking like yields are going to be very heavy. Last year I said I'd be lucky to get 500 pounds of tomatoes, but this year I think it's more than likely. I've added blackberries with thorns. Those will eventually spread through and around the garden plot for security. Soon I will be adding strawberries and okra.

The method I used was discussed here but briefly it involves digging pits a little smaller than 4 feet by 4 feet 30 inches deep. A thick layer of wood chips is put in the bottom, followed by soil, then grass, weeds, cow manure, cover crops (hard red wheat mostly), kitchen waste, and urine interspersed with more soil. No fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides have been necessary.

My goal is to be growing 30 percent of our food in the next 3-5 years. But that can be sped up if the collapse accelerates more than I expect. We'll see how the fall and winter go. We should see a lot of price increases at a minimum.

Mystery surrounds death of NINTH scientist tied to US secrets as disturbing pattern grows
While there have been no public allegations of foul play, Hicks' case marks the ninth person with ties to America's space or nuclear secrets who has died or mysteriously vanished in recent years, which has set off alarm bells among US national security experts.

Moreover, three of these scientists had close ties to Hicks, as all of them worked at the Jet Propulsion Lab or participated in NASA missions there. Monica Reza, JPL's new Director of the Materials Processing Group, vanished without a trace in June 2025, just months after beginning her tenure at the NASA lab.

Two other men with deep ties to JPL died recently, including a long-time coworker of Hicks, Frank Maiwald, who died in July 2024 at age 61, with even less public acknowledgement of his untimely passing.

He said the replacement rate Army wide was less that 1 new recruit for every 2 separations. When asked why, he couldn’t really give a concrete answer
.
That's probably the best and most accurate answer. They're so far off that they don't even know where and when they went wrong. Sad days for an institution previously brimming with pride. The ranks should feel shame but instead kick the can and claim ignorance.

I recently attended a meeting of our US Army veteran’s group. The invited speaker was the senior enlisted Army recruiter of the region. His topic was “Recruiting in today's Army”. He was less than optimistic verging on desperate. He told us that less than 10% of walk-ins, online referrals and recruiting events at high school, trade schools and college campuses actually show up for an interview and less than 1% actually show up for the ASVAB test let alone the physical in his area of responsibility in Western Missouri, Eastern Kansas, Southern Iowa and Eastern Nebraska and some days the whole region had only 1 or 2 testing. He said the replacement rate Army wide was less that 1 new recruit for every 2 separations. When asked why, he couldn’t really give a concrete answer.

I don't think I need to provide extensive details, but the most interesting one was when he proclaimed that most objectives had been met and the war was almost over. Boomers born circa 1947 who are in charge often believe things are true just because they say they are.
We know that he's a pathological liar and is being led along by fanatics, lunatics and evildoers. He's literally an empty shell working for whatever is most profitable for himself and his clan. Such horrible things were said of him during his first term but no clear evidence was forthcoming and the people screaming were also lunatics. But the evidence to support such vile claims is not only overwhelming but all out in the open and easily found. He's not the grey champion but rather the bringer of the end of the "world" that we've been living in. Of course there will be something after the destruction, not an actual ending of the world that lunatics and fanatics "believe".

Balkanization and remnants will hold out we hope and although we call it a Dark Age, perhaps there will be more light and clarity for some than currently experienced. Hopefully the sun can obliterate their machines with which they're planning to enslave us with.

I've been meaning to comment on this and things related.

What aeden is doing is a net positive for the soil. Cover cropping and letting the land lie fallow.

In my case, I am building soil using the discards from industrial civilization, which is good, but also using some materials at the expense of the surrounding land, which is not so good. So what I am doing is a net positive versus how industrial civilization operates, but a net negative versus how nature operates unmolested.

Earlier in this Dark Age Hovel I had discussed location and how a borderline location could be beneficial if someone prefers to fight the problem of fertility of the land instead of denser populations. To do that, someone has to "borrow" from the surrounding land somewhat. When growing up in Upstate New York, which is a very good vegetable growing area, our first garden was put into production by tilling, adding a little cow manure and lime, and planting immediately. Yields were good right from the start. That's not the case in the borderline area of Central Texas where I am now. While the soil is OK as a base, it will not support crops with minimal amendments because the depth is not adequate and it has too much clay. Currently, the surrounding area is grassland that is being used as pasture for cattle. So in addition to discards from industrial civilization, I gather a relatively large amount of material from the pasture and surrounding area out back, which depletes it slightly. As an example, just a few days ago, in about a 250 square foot area of grassland behind the house, I pulled up about a quarter of the dead grass, chopped it up, added it to about a 15 square foot area of newly dug garden, then used the remainder to mulch a newly planted area of about 80 square feet. Normally, that grass would die back as this season's grass grows up, gradually enriching the land. Now about a quarter of that is gone.

Also, the fertility of the area prepared 2 years ago seems better than it was last year, indicating that it can take at least 2 years to optimally prepare ground for growing vegetables in this location.

We let the land rest since 2019. To heal from the chemical farmers.
Bernie and Fred retired also and will decide to pasture as we indicated.
