Any guess, John, on how this will end?
Tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran have getting increasingly
vitriolic for years, especially since the Arab Spring began. I don't
expect this to end in any way except war.
How long until things get violent? I can't imagine Iran or Turkey allowing this situation to continue.
I actually believe that a Saudi-Turkish war is more likely than a Saudi-Iranian war if this crisis with Qatar goes hot. Turkey has actually deployed troops to Qatar as part of its response, while Iran hasn't. This probably has to do with the fact that Turkey is Sunni, while Iran is Shiite. Those civilization differences are why Turkey and Qatar are military allies through the IMAFT treaty; while Iran and Qatar are still technically in a proxy war with each other in Syria.
