George Washington fought the Indians on American (then British colonial) soil. George Washington warned his countrymen not to go abroad looking for monsters to destroy when he left office. Attacking the Barbary Pirates was not the same as invading Iraq.The attack on the Barbary pirates resulted in very few American deaths and was extremely limited in scope. Fighting the war of 1812 on American soil was not an act of imperialism. Attempting to use these wars to justify any current military action is complete and utter nonsense.

No one has ever followed that advice, even the Founding Fathers themselves. John Adams fought an undeclared naval war with France. Thomas Jefferson launched an invasion against the Barbary pirates. James Madison began the war of 1812. Even George Washington fought numerous wars with the Indians during his presidency, so that's complete and utter nonsense.

Pat Buchanan commented on just this point today:

What is vital to us in any of these venues to justify sending an American army to fight, or risking a nuclear war?

We have lost control of our destiny. We have lost the freedom our Founding Fathers implored us to maintain – the freedom to stay out of wars of foreign counties on faraway continents.

Like the British and French empires, the American imperium is not sustainable. We have issued so many war guarantees it is almost assured that we will be dragged into every future great crisis and conflict on the planet.

If we do not review and discard some of these war guarantees, we shall never know peace. Donald Trump once seemed to understand this. Does he still?

We can seize their arsenal even if we aren't in NATO.

How is ISIS a threat to America? Latino gangs kill and wreck more havoc than ISIS does and yet America is not bombing Mexico. We should have sent commandos in to get Osama Bin Laden, not an entire army. We ended up killing him with 20 SEALs. We didn't need a hundred thousand soldiers to invade and occupy a hell hole like Afghanistan. And don't even get me started on Iraq.

I hope America quits NATO and goes home.

It's inarguable that the PKK is an existential threat to Turkey as long as the Turks continue to deny the Kurds their right to self-determination. So too is ISIS an existential threat to America. It's hypocritical for the Turks to get furious at America for putting its self-interest first, while the Turks insist upon putting their self-interest first.

Why is America in Syria anyway? We get our oil from Canada and Venezuela. Shouldn't this be an EU problem? The refugees are flooding into the EU, not America.

Why is America still in NATO? The French just voted for mass immigration. The 'new French' will be flying ISIS flags off the Eiffel Tower inside a decade. What are we doing defending people who have no interest in defending themselves? You can't help people who will not help themselves. And yes, that's how I see it. That's how a lot of people see it.

The EU was started as an act of Anti-Americanism. The Europeans love to attack, snub, and ridicule Americans at every turn. Americans, including my relatives, fought against Hitler for all this?
