I don't know what your TV or the newspapers tell you in the United States but here in France they first put their fingers towards the Muslims before the indictment of Anders Breivik and next towards "Christian fundamentalists", i.e. roman Catholics (the average Frenchman, even the average French journalist, can't make the difference between Catholics and Protestants).
Well, it's a great victory for xenophobia and a demonstration by the example of how prejudices distorted the information treatment.

Even without such direct accusations, there are more nuanced indirect accusations: That these rising right-wing parties are creating a social atmosphere and environment that encourages right-wing extremists like Breivik.

The accusations have it backwards. The changing social atmosphere is what helped the "right-wing" parties ascend. Social mood leads, not lags, political changes.
