I'm going with the "not that bright" argument. The would-be bomber in Portland, OR a couple of weeks ago, despite nominally being an engineering student at a local college, was apparently unable to make or procure explosives without the help of the FBI agents he thought were fellow Jihadis.

It's amazing the amount of money wasted fighting an enemy that can't build an explosive by themselves in a heavily agricultural region. These would-be murderers would be more successful if they just drove their cars into a crowd like the oldies do. Hope I didn't give them any ideas, but I doubt it. Maybe John is right and their heart just isn't in the whole mass murder thing.

"Such unusual bomber-to-victim death statistics are, of course, heartening for both coalition troops—who have described the Afghan suicide bombers as "amateurs"—and the Afghan people—who are usually the victims of the clumsy bombings."

=============================================================================

Coalition troops are evidently not thinking clearly, then. "Amateur" suicide bombers? As opposed to what? Professional suicide bombers who get paid for blowing themselves to bits? It's hardly a long-term career choice.

Oxymoron of the day: military intelligence.
