Of all the things that have come out of NK this is probably the most concerning. It reminds me of Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" when the prisoner would smoke their last cigarette before passing.

I don't think this is that concerning. If Kim Jung un dies, it could allow for negotiations that might end the crisis, or, even better, regime change. There's no guarantee that the new regime would be any better, but I doubt it would be worse. His death would be an opportunity. I don't think his generals would listen to him if he ordered a nuclear strike from his death bed. This guy's poor physical condition sounds like stress is taking a savage toll on his health. I think the odds of war on the Korean peninsula have dropped sharply.

Could Kim Jong-in's weight gain actually be body armor? Some body armor is actually quite bulky, the more protection, the bulkier it gets. I saw the photograph posted and compared it to earlier pictures and his face and hands are not in sync with such a massive weight gain. His face and hands appear to be the same size since his last weight gain, including his double chin. I think he's a scared rabbit. Not good for someone with a button he can push.

Mr. Xenakis - Love your Web Log!!! It is the only "news" that make sense in this wacky world.

I don't know if body armor is a possibility, but I know those photos
are scrutinized closely by intelligence services in South Korea,
Japan, and the US military, as well as by many analyst and media
organizations, and if it were all just body armor, my guess is that it
would have been discovered, and then would have leaked out.

Thanks for the compliment!

It seems tensions have lessened, even with the recent desertion of a North Korean soldier. Perhaps the North Koreans have decided to cool it for a while; or is this the calm before the storm? I really wonder about this. A few months ago I was expecting to die in a nuclear war, but now it seems to be okay.

I think China is lying. They could easily crash the North Korean economy by closing the brides across the Yalu. I think the drama you wrote about is a Chinese ploy.

Do you see this cooling down like things did in Bhutan?

I'm not sure what you mean by "cooling down." If a volcano
explodes every few weeks, then I suppose you can say that it
cools down between explosions.

And I've quoted this saying a time or two: "Peace is that brief,
glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading."

Anyway, when the next explosion occurs is pretty much up to the
Chinese and North Koreans. Some reports indicate that China is
building up infrastructure in preparation for the next attack on
Bhutan's Doklam Plateau. And China might do something provocative in
the South China Sea or East China Sea at any time. And North Korea
might conduct another nuclear weapon or ballistic missile test at any
time. Any one of the actions would be the equivalent of another
explosion of the volcano.

Well, that's not the answer I was hoping for.

But thank you. And thank you for work. I'm American, so I've always been an optimist. However, optimism won't help you avoid a war. Now I know that for sure.

Why do the Koreans keep stirring the pot? Why this mornings rocket launch? Do the Koreans want a war or are they just enjoying the attention?

For 25-30 years, North Korea's goal was to develop a nuclear weapon
capalibity that could attack the US mainland. They're very close now.
