Yes, Assad is a monster. In order to maintain a complete and balanced perspective it's important to remember that Assad's Iranian sponsors are monsters as well. As are ISIS of course. Only the Kurds possibly escape that label, though the Turks would disagree. But then, they're monsters as well.

Muslim societies simply do not subscribe to Western norms of morality. They are unrepentedly cruel to their enemies. Mercy to a defeated enemy is simply not in their lexicon.

They're locked in a tribal perspective, one in which all not of the tribe are not quite human to them. It's not accidental that many primitive tribe's names translate as some version of "the people". Nor accidental that tribal societies have always been seen as barbaric by more advanced societies. Tribal societies may have some admirable qualities but invariably they have appalling ones as well. More tellingly, they generally don't self-examine because tribal societies are generally "shame cultures", which keeps them from evolving into a more mature morality.

Even during the worst of the 2009 protests in Iran, you never had the
government targeting hospitals and schools with missiles, or dropping
barrel bombs with chlorine and shrapnel on ordinary marketplaces, or
killing hundreds of people with Sarin gas. Al-Assad is in a class way
beyond the other monsters of today, the same class as Hitler, Pol Pot,
Stalin and Mao.

No argument as to Assad's brutality.
The Mullah's have easily put down challenges to their authority. In similar circumstances to Assad, they'd act just as brutally. Do you imagine that in the Mullah's prisons, any less horrific acts occur than in Assad's?
Neither maniacs nor religious fanatics restrain themselves from acting horrifically.

Neither al-Assad nor Iran's mullahs are religious fanatics.

Iran's mullahs are not madmen. Al-Assad is a psychopathic monster.
There is nothing comparable to him so far this century. There is
nothing comparable to Saydnaya prison in Iran. Countries like Iran
and Turkey may lock up hundreds of political prisoners, and torture
them as you say. But that's still not comparable to the "industrial
strength" electrocution, eye-gouging, rape, strangulation, starvation,
and beating of tens of thousands of political prisoners over a 10-year
period that al-Assad practices in Syria. Nor is there anything
comparable to the widespread use of barrel bombs with chlorine and
shrapnel dropped on innocent women and children in a marketplace. or
missiles targeting hospitals and schools. On a scale of 1 to 10 on
torture, Iran may be a 9, but al-Assad is a 20. There is a
difference.

And there's nothing like the crematorium in Iran. Al-Assad truly is
another Hitler, in every way.
