China's economic boycott of Korea over THAAD has hit the country like a ton bricks. I went to the flagship Lotte department store today, and it was practically empty. I have friends who own their own businesses, and they tell me they are facing bankruptcy because of the loss of Chinese customers. The thing is, Koreans, by and large, hate the Chinese. This embargo is only heightening the hatred. I think this embargo has finally woken people up to the fact that China is an existential threat to Korea.

So you live in Seoul?

So you live in Seoul?
Tonight, for the first time in my life, Koreans told me they were afraid that war was imminent. I have lived in Asia (on and off) since the 1970s, and I have never heard a Korean say anything like that. Tonight, someone in my office told me that she was scheduled to to visit America in May, but that she was afraid a war would break out before she had a chance to leave. Leaving the office tonight, a co-worker told me she was scared. I was stunned. This can't bode well.

If this is the end, oh well. I just hope I die instantly. I'm worried I won't be killed in the first artillery barrage. As densely packed as Seoul is, the death toll, the carnage, will be beyond belief.

I have family scattered across Asia. I suppose they are as good as dead. The feeling is sickening.

Do the people in charge of all this even know what they doing?

I can't believe how much the mood here has flipped-the word 'changed' would be inappropriate. Things are different now. I feel sick. I want to puke.

You certainly have my sympathy. It's amazing how much destruction can
be caused by crazy leaders like Kim Jong-un and Bashar al-Assad, who
have WMDs and use them or threaten to use them in a generational
Crisis era.

They don't recognize they're in a GC era, of course.

What if they DID recognize that? If they did, they'd be "fighting" their own personal history while at the same time realizing THEY themselves could be the trigger of apocalypse.

..could make you MORE crazy than being a descendant of the insane already makes you!

Also,.. "FLIPPED" is an interesting term for "change of mood". My first thought when "guest" used the term was how the barometric pressure drops into the bilge when "weather" is imminent at sea.

No sailor is EVER surprised by bad weather. They just "may" value their desired course more than having to change it to avoid the storm.

..it sucks when the Captain of your vessel holds such values, and the other passengers are impatient drunks on WAY too much Dramamine demanding arrival in port by 6:30am.

That rats have started to flee the sinking ship in droves. I have had two long time foreign residents in Korea tell me today that they were 'going on vacation' for a few weeks. A former co-worker has decided that now would be a good time to fly back home for a few weeks. Our phone conversation went something like this:

Foreigner: I'm going on vacation in a couple days. I'll be back in June. I'm having a going away party at my place. I'd like to you to attend.

Me: Really? A vacation? Why are you having a going away party for that?

Foreigner I just want to have a little get together, you know?

Me: Is your girlfriend going with you? (His soulmate...)

Foreigner No.

Me: I'm really busy this weekend. I'll see you when you come back.

Foreigner Okay.

So, he's going back home and leaving his Korean girlfriend behind. What must see think of that? He's leaving his girlfriend behind along with his rented apartment. Asian women have always been disposable to foreign men. What must their Korean employers make of this?

I have been in a few really bad situations, and I have yet to meet anyone who will admit that they are scared and just to save their own skin. I wish just once, before I die, that someone would admit to me that they are scared and taking off.

I have heard other rumors of foreigners requesting emergency leave because of 'family emergencies' at home, including one foreigner whose father had collapsed and died yesterday (even though he told me himself that his father died back in 1999).

I have the option to leave, but I haven't taken it. I think I'm going to ride this one out.

Well, it's also possible that he invited her to go with him, but she
didn't want to leave home -- e.g., if her parents are going to die,
she wants to die with them. Did he prepay the rent on the apartment?
It's also possible that she encouraged him to go -- either because she
loves him and doesn't want him to die, or perhaps (depending on his
nationality) because it's too dangerous for him to stay in Seoul, and
he could even be subjected to torture, if the wrong people come to
power.

Hope your ride is successful. If you can't write during the ride,
then write again when you're on the other side - assuming you're still
alive.

I can understand those in Korea, especially foreigners, who think the world is about to end, but I have my doubts that "Insane Fat Boy" will commit suicide just yet.

He may be insane, but heʻll never be ready to give up what he has.

Extreme bravado is a typical behavior of the sniveling coward, when he feels "impervious" in his safe little bubble.

I see a Nicolae Ceaușescu -like ending to this one once the sniveling coward breaks forward and the military has to choose suicide protecting the coward, or survival (of themselves and the State) by "cleansing" the image of the Kim Family of the taint of the insane little fat boy.

..but then, we shall see I suppose. :)
