I find it very confusing that they they equate fear with respect. Is this problem in the translation?

Are they trying to emulate Russia when Russia invaded Georgia and satallited the regions of Ossetia and Abkhazia or whatstheirnames?

Or it is pandering to their own ego's that they are after? Like here in Norway for example the Norwegian politicians have been pleading and begging the Chinese officials for forgivness after the Nobel committe gave the prize to Chinese dissidents which offended the Chinese regime greatly.

Who do you think "equates" fear with respect?

Fear is a necessary component of respect. To respect someone is to fear not being on that person's "good side". To fear the withdrawal of the benefits available from that person, or the imposition on you of the "maleficence" of that person. (And by "person" I mean, in this context, "country".)

Respect always contains some amount fear, but respect is not respect if it's composed entirely of fear.

What China wants is respect, but they'll take fear if that's all they can get. That desire, of course, is universal, at least as far as countries are concerned, because borders are respected only through fear.

One fears annoying a respected country by violating it's border. One fears what one fears a feared country will do if it's border is violated.

But in any case, fear is the "least common denominator", and the first goal to strive for.

China is seeking more "respect" by increasing the fear component of the "respect" that they get now.

They realize that increasing the fear component of respect drives out the "admiration" aspect of respect, but they don't care in the least, as they simply want to maximize their ability to "motivate" their enemies to allow them to do as they please. :)

China's wish to be so strong that "no country would dare launch a military showdown with China" is telling in my opinion.

They're not trying to deter ATTACKS from their enemies, they're trying to deter THE APPEARANCE OF RESISTANCE to any claims they make.

They are coming closer and closer to equating not recognizing their absurd claims as fact to actually attacking them.

This "equation" gives them the rationale to launch first-stikes while claiming they are responses to "attacks".

..simply calling their claims absurd is an attack for which they are "perfectly justified" in responding to with an attack.

All this "respect" talk on their part is ENTIRELY for internal consumption,.. and for the truly idiotic politicians abroad who are amendable to sucking-up to them (the Chinese).

Then it is the same as leftists in media today proclaiming physical violence against conservatives are justified because "hate Speech" is not verbal discourse but a physical attack that causes real rape (Yes they actually said that in the Berkley "protest").
