I thought that war was coming between us and China no matter what path that we choose to follow. It's best that we be prepared for it. The only criticism I have for this move is that it's more symbolic than anything else and if they do decide to attack, they have the capability to destroy or at least severely damage our forces in the pacific.

Also, from Hilary's words, it sounds like they know that China is a rival and are trying to pressure them, but at the same time, don't think that they'd really be willing to use military force.

China's leaders brought "encirclement" on themselves, by pressuring their neighbors to agree that China owns all resources in the area from China to Indonesia and west to the shoreline. If it wasn't the US supporting China's neighbors it would be Europe or Russia or a coalition of powers. They'd hunt till they found or created a group with enough weight to act as a counterbalance. And China's leaders know this perfectly well. They simply can't admit "we totally screwed up, forgive us" to the Chinese public.

Well, just as China is intending to counter the United States, its neighbors are trying to counter them. Considering how aggressive they've gotten over the past couple of years, they're right to fear them. Seems like even if they're ill-disposed towards us, they've decided that we're preferable to the alternative.

I can't believe you've studied the history of China as a nation with that statement! Tibetan people would recognize the danger in China's aggressive actions in the South China seas and your statement seems incredibly naive!
