The public reaction to the violent union action would be negative in normal times. It is highly likely they will be regarded as either heroes protecting the US or as desparate men protecting their jobs, at this time. Many parts of the social norm go south during a crisis era, you can have old grannies laughing as they bring the grandchildren to watch heads being chopped off, as happened during the French Revolution.

Also, if they are seen as taking more effective action than Congress at protecting US jobs, then some of them will gain political power and the desire to join a union will go up in a significant manner. This of course has implications for the greater economy as a whole.

I think Erdogan wants Israel to take some action against the Turkish military. This could be used as a wedge to force the US to choose between supporting Israel or NATO. The US is pledged to support all NATO members against outside attack, and Turkey is a member. Israel is not.

It is possible that Erdogan will be distracted from his obsession with Israel by a war with Syria. The states in the region don't want to fight Syria, but they don't feel they can just stand by much longer, either.

As I said in the financial matters forum, the people of Greece are going to rip off this bandaid, they can't take the stress of uncertainty much longer. WWIII could easily start as a war between Turkey and Greece over Cyprus. (Cyprus, beautiful place, if you could just make all the people move somewhere else so they'd quit hating each other.)
