"War is God's way of teaching Americans geography."

Moldova was part of Romania before WW II, but it was then split off
thanks to an unholy agreement between Hitler and Stalin.
As far as I can figure out, Romania is on a WW I timeline, along with
the Balkans, with its latest crisis war being the Romanian Revolution
of 1989.
However, there was massive bloodshed in Moldova in WW II, and it
appears to have reset to a WW II timeline, and is currently in a
crisis era. (These "first turning resets" are always difficult to
understand.)
Moldova remained part of the Soviet Union after WW II. As was
Stalin's usual practice, never hesitating to create a situation
leading to future bloodshed, Stalin moved thousands of Russians into
Moldova, in order to dilute the Romanian population. And Stalin set
up a large military installation in Transdniestria, a region within
Moldova. (See the strip of land at the right side of Moldova on the
map above.)
Moldova apparently did not participate much in the Romanian
revolution of 1989, but when the Soviet Union split up in 1991,
Moldova became an independent country.
There's a comparison here to the situation in East and West Germany.
When the Berlin Wall came down, Germany was reunited, but the extreme
poverty in East Germany has hurt Germany's economy dramatically since
then.
As I understand it, when Moldova became "available" in 1991, the
Romanians didn't want to reunite because of the same kind of poverty
issue.
So Moldova became an independent country, still with a large Russian
population. And Transdniestria, with its large military
installation, is apparently still considered to be part of Russia.
Today, Moldova is an economic basket case, and it's even possible
that the world's financial crisis will be triggered by Moldova, as
much as by any other country.
But even more important, nationalist feelings are being aroused all
around.
Moldova's government is still a "Communist" government, with close
ties to Russia.
When the Communist party government was re-elected a few days ago, it
triggered large demonstrations and riots by people carrying Romanian
and EU flags. The Moldovan government is accusing Romania of staging
an "attempted coup." The Russian government is warning of
repercussions unless things settle down.

This country is ripe for a war. We'll have to see in the next few
days whether things escalate or fizzle.
Sincerely,
