Korean Assembly Elections

Post by thomasglee »

Elections for the Korean Assembly were held yesterday and it seems the conservative party held onto power... Conventional wisdom was that the Democratic United Party (DUP) along with the Unified Progressive Party would win the majority, but in what is considered somewhat of a surprise, the Saenuri (New Frontier) Party won 152 seats in the 300-seat National Assembly. Although they dropped from 162 seats, it was expected they would lose much more and end up as the minority party. Apparently, the masses decided otherwise.

As one friend of mine put it, it appears the South Korean electorate prefer having their country run by a “party of competent but cynical crooks than a party of incompetent but similarly cynical opportunists”.
