I can't see anyone in Washington with real power who is actually serious about reducing the deficit in a meaningful way. Lot of posturing, but no real interest in the matter. The Social Security discussion is effectively a discussion of a partial default, IOW, they are saying "we sold you 2 trillion in bonds, and we don't want to raise taxes now that you want to cash them in, so we'll reduce benefits and not pay off the bonds, ever". Refusal of a government to pay off mature bonds is default by definition.

Example of the above, during a time of record high food and fuel prices, the subsidy for corn ethanol was not eliminated. This subsidy is paid to a small number of very large farmers, and is simply ridiculous in such a time. And they can't even get rid of that. They had meaningless resolutions passed, but the subsidy remains intact.

“We’re trying to make the best of a bad situation,” Thune said, noting that earlier this month the Senate voted 73-27 to end $6 billion spent annually on the ethanol blender’s tax credit. While that vote won’t go beyond the Senate floor, it reflects the dim view many in Congress have of ethanol subsidies.

Gag me. If anyone wants to talk about government caused malinvestment, that's a good place to start.
