Hmm. What about the Cuban Missile Crisis? That's coming up a good two years from now, and I can't imagine that being hyped up about the end of the world via nuclear war wouldn't have just a little impact. And it was a widespread event, at least in the US...

You're not thinking. The kind of events we're talking about are the
Spanish Flu pandemic that killed tens of millions of people or the
1929 crash that made tens of millions of people bankrupt or homeless.
The Cuban missile crisis was a political event that was over in a day.

So basically, events with a tangible, extreme and direct impact on younger individuals over a wide area. Does clear up the conditions required for the hypothesis a bit. What events post-1950 would rate in the US, in that case?

I really can't. I don't think there's been anything remotely comparable
to the Spanish Flu pandemic or the 1929 crash.
