Greece has defaulted on their national debt numerous times since becoming independent from the Ottoman Empire. The EU has made this nearly impossible to do. The Greeks, Italians, Portuguese, etc. could devalue their own currencies and revive their economies. The Euro doesn't allow them to do it. So, WHY NOT BITE THE BULLET AND DROP THE EURO? It's insanity to stay on this course. It's not only hopeless, it's pointless. The British Pound has helped the UK stay afloat. The Euro is a millstone around the rest of Europe's neck. One country is going to have to drop the Euro and restore their old currency. It will be bumpy for a year or two, but then things should improve. Take the risk; if not for yourself, for your children. What do you have to lose but your chains?

If something can't continue, something else will continue, as life goes on.

..extreme (and stupid) maneuvers will be used until the cliff is reached, then there will be a fall over the cliff, and then, since the "actor" in this scenario cannot die but can only get more and more angry, weird events and most of "normal life" will carry on.

The masses will "be annoyed and get angrier" and the "investors" (those who are owed money that is never gonna come to them) will take a haircut, rearrange their finances, and "normal life" will carry on.

All even-moderately-sensible societies have a way to handle "bankruptcy and sanctuary" type situations.

When an asymptotic "climb" towards unbearable conditions happens, some "phase change" occurs that relieves the pressure, and a "new normal" regime starts.

But how different, really, can this "new normal" be from the "old normal" if it's acceptable AS any kind of normal?

It is simple self-preservation of a society (even if it's a macro-society such as "western eurasian society") to have a relief valve for unbearable pressure, as is necessary post-war or post-catastrophe.

Life goes on. You can't stop it. The theoretical things, like wealth and "freedom" may transform but life goes on, and hope endures.

Pandora's last gift will out, always. :)

Aloha gangies! <shaka!>

I read the 2 posts with fascination. Boys will be boys? Barry pushed America down the primrose path with a parental fist. Any nation slipping willingly into socialism under guise of "entitlement equality"/collectivism/communism loses human character. Mere existence is merely breathing to survive.
Greece has long wallowed in pay with no work. Checks mailed without any work effort. Now Italy. Venezuela. And what of the neighboring countries faced with refugees? Historic evidence to see. The endings do not vary. Without a Big Rescuer Parent, poverty and starvation. As John points out, consequences are inevitable.

Default and start over. Argentina did it and they were able to get foreign investment immediately after.
