The reason that we don't have constant population killing warfare is because it takes a set of particular conditions to push the perception of "the masses" into that highly anxious state about the imminence of starvation.

You are right. Western Europe and North America will be slums in less than 10 years. Ancient Rome and Byzantium: while Western Europe fell into the Dark Ages, Byzantium entered a Golden Age.
