the Chinese call them "coast guard cutters" and paint them up red and white but it's really a clever Chinese deception. They're building these things with like 10-12,000 ton displacement, the size of a large cruiser in some cases! and it's believed they are armed with anti-ship and anti-air missiles.

So the Chinese can use these vessels to bully neighbors while attempting to remain just below the threshold for military escalation by saying "hey, they're only coast guard vessels".

P.S. John, I gotta ask. Given your relationship, What is your take on Bannon leaving the white house. I'm not taking this as a positive development. Although the media wanted a scalp, and I suppose hopefully Bannon can exercise some influence from outside the white house. I gotta tell you, I'm not terribly pleased with President Trump over this, and I am a huge Trump supporter.

I wonder if Bannon died what Malcolm X did?

Malcolm X was upset about the Nation of Islam's leader, Elijah Mohammad's, sleazy private life, and went against the Nation of Islam's personal directive and not comment on the assassination of JFK. Malcolm's "The chickens have come home to roost" remark sealed his fate: he was removed from his position, left the NOI and began active opposition to the organization.

Could Bannon's unsolicited and outrageously reckless interview along the same lines?

I've always felt that the country would be much better off if foreign
policy could be guided by Generational Dynamics analysis. Barack
Obama's policies were purely (left-wing) ideologically driven and
never made any sense at all, and led to one disaster after another.
My hope was that Bannon could guide the Trump administration to a
foreign policy that would be analytically driven, and would be best
for the country.

News reports indicate that Bannon resigned on 8/7, with his actual
departure delayed until 8/18. So his departure apparently had nothing
to do with the American Prospect interview or with the Charlottesville
event, although it was related to previous instances of political
chaos. News reports also indicate Bannon will continue to be an
advisor to Trump, though could mean much or very little.

One other problem that I and others have discovered is that the
easiest way to get everyone to hate you is to tell them what the
generational theory predictions are. I have no idea whether Bannon
ever quoted me or my articles in the White House, but if he did, it's
possible that's just one more reason people hated him.

So I'll be watching now to see if Trump's policies in the future will
be purely (right-wing) ideologically driven and will make no sense at
all, or if Bannon's influence extends beyond his leaving the White
House.

Trump announced that decisions were made on Friday about an
Afghanistan policy, and that they'll be announced soon. That may be
the first sign of what's coming.

For us young, naive and inexperienced readers, specifically what signals will you be looking for in the Afghanistan policy announcement and what inferences would you draw with regard to what's coming? What would be considered a policy that makes no sense, and what would a policy informed by generational dynamics look like?

I discussed the whole US strategy in Afghanistan at length a couple of
weeks ago.

** 8-Aug-17 World View -- Dozens of Shia Muslims in Afghanistan killed in fourth Taliban victory in 3 weeks

Apparently Trump will give a nationwide televised address on
Afghanistan from the Oval Office on Monday evening.
