Now for the "200,000 rupees per year" figure, that is less than $3,000 and having just 1% of the people earning more than $3k does not seem realistic. My point is that the articles you cite may not have all their marbles in a row.

Really?? You come into this forum and whine that I parrot
articles? Really?
The reason that I post links to articles is that there are other
visitors who are not so brilliant and knowledgeable as yourself,
and appreciate being able to read more background information
on a story.
As for the figures, India's population is around 1.3 billion, with an
average annual income around $1,500. Many people live in poor rural
areas where there are no banks, and little money. You should not
judge India's people by affluent American or European standards.
