Is Russia going to be an aggressor in the CoC WW?

Putin doesn't care about the specific results of a generational dynamics analysis...he just wants everything up to the Dnieper.

I don't mean to troll or anything but as much as I value the insights of gx, I've never agreed with the assertion that the Russians will come to be allied with the west in the near term. Despite the animosity between the two, especially competition over Central Asia, I fully believe Russia will align themselves with China and any other coalition of anti-western actors, there is just too much hostility between NATO and Russia especially looking forward to their ambitions in the Baltic states, Moldova, the Georgian breakaway states, the Donbas, their increased operational tempo in the undersea domain in the Baltic and North Sea including disruptions of undersea infrastructure etc. I believe Putin will view the enemy of his enemy as his friend and view any war between China and the US as an opportunity to act. Just my opinion.

America should also arm the Chechen rebels in the Kavkaz.

The puppet leader of Chechnya is loathed by his own people. If America came out in support of the rebels, even tacitly, the Khadrov regime would collapse.

Russia had to send all of their elite military formations (read: actually functioning) to fight in Chechnya during the last two Chechen wars. There is no way that the Russians could invade Europe and hold off the Chechens and their Muslim allies across the Kavkaz while invading Europe.

If Ronald Reagan had been president the last 8 years, Chechnya would already be free and Putin murdered in a palace coup. It's only the gross ineptitude of Obama that has saved Putin's life.

Why would Russia want to invade the remainder of the Ukraine? All that would mean would be an endless occupation that would cost billions, even in the short term. The invasion would also mean a massive refugee crisis involving millions of Ukrainian refugees at a time when Europe can't afford the refugees pouring in from the rest of the world. It would force NATO to intervene-like in Kosovo in 1999. It's almost as if Russia wants war with NATO.

Russia should at least wait until Donald Trump is elected. Then Russia could conquer Europe and there would be no NATO to stop them. The EU would probably surrender without a fight.

Russia may do something like invade Ukraine again, or one of the other
local nations, on the pretense of "protecting Russians," but will not
launch a major attack on the West.

I believe that only country that will do that is China.

Speaking of which. According to the Asia Maritime transparency Initiative, new commercially available satellite imagery now shows several hardened aircraft shelters either completed or nearing completion on fiery cross, subi, and mischief reefs. These are clearly designed to accommodate any fighter-jet in the PLAAF or Naval Aviation, including J-11 Su-30. So far enough to shelter about 24 aircraft.

There are also hardened reinforced hangars large enough for H-6 bombers, and H-6U refueling tankers, Y-8 transports, and KJ200 Airborne early warning forward air control aircraft. The largest of the hangars can accommodate the largest planes in the Chinese fleet — the Y-20 and Il-76 transports, Il-78 refueling tankers and KJ-2000 surveillance aircraft.

To create a buffer zone. Napoleon, Germany, Germany again etc. The Russians have a long memory, and know how vulnerable the Rodina is to invasion. The Russian way of war, defensively anyway, is to trade space for time. Hence the desire to extend that buffer even at tremendous cost, even a few hundred extra kilometres, enough to bring thier tactical nukes to bear on a would be invader. The Dnieper is one of the last physical defensible barriers, after that it's a only few hours of tank-country to Moscow.
