I have long thought China would want to be defacto controlling the South China sea before Mr No Real Redline left office. Think they are on schedule for that.

Could Taiwan just give up and try a Hong Kong deal? Why are they protesting the South China Sea decision?

Many Taiwanese are looking on the Hong Kong situation with horror,
because of the way that Beijing has been treating Hong Kong citizens,
and in particular has reneged on its promise of free elections in Hong
Kong. So they do not want to be another Hong Kong.

Taiwan lays claim to Taiping Island in the Spratly Island group.
Taiwan rejects the Tribunal findings because the ruling does not
recognize Taiwan's claim. Taiwan is also pissed off because the
Tribunal did not even permit them to participate in the hearings,
because the UN does not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation.

Wouldn't it be difficult to conquer Taiwan? Taiwan is not that close to the Chinese mainland. The shortest distance between Taiwan and China is 1300 miles. Not exactly Calais to England (20 miles apart).

Taiwan also has a population of 27 million people. If the Taiwanese chose to fight, China will have a tough fight ahead. If they chose to bombard Taiwan into ruin, how would benefit China?

Do you think America would intervene and protect Taiwan?
