These barbarians are practising a well established strain of Islam; wahabism/salafism, based on a purely literal interpretation of the Quran and Hadith.

The salafis see themselves as religious reformers fighting secular Muslims and other "unbelievers" who refuse to submit to a literal interpretation of the Quran.

When the gulf Arab states began seeing Shia extremism exported by Iran as a threat reaching as deep into the Arab world as Lebanon, Gaza, Yemen, they reacted by funding, supporting and exporting their own flavour of Sunni terror to push back against the threat they perceived from a post-revolutionary Iran. They were perfectly content to allow and promote this (and still do outside of the kingdom) through the direct funding and exportation of wahabi religious schools and mosques, so long as they were killing mostly Shias, westerners and Israelis, but now their golem has grown beyond their control and is openly hostile to the gulf Arab governments that created them.

this rivalry between Iran and the Sunni Arabs, to be the dominant force "in charge" of the Islamic faith(and custodians of the three holy sites) is nothing new, this is just the most recent chapter. I believe it is more than a bit disingenuous to say that this has nothing to do with Islam. That is like saying the various European wars of religion during the Protestant reformation had "nothing to do with Christianity".

What started as a struggle between Shia and Sunni s has become a battle for the very soul of the Islamic faith. It has become a choice between a secularist moderate interpretation of Islam and a literal one, and as such has very much to do with Islam and how it is practised.

Comparing the Medina terrorist act to the Protestant reformation wars
seems a huge stretch. You could compare the Iran/Iraq war to the
Protestant reformation wars, or you could compare the Medina attack to
various attacks by the IRA or the 2011 attack by Anders Behring
Breivik.

"Is there anyone on earth who still thinks these barbarians HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH ISLAM?"

Absolutely, because ISIS is doing everything Muhammad and the Quar'an promotes. ISIS targets the less devout Muslims. Muhammad would do the same. ISIS is practicing pure Islam. You have doubts?

John wrote:But whatever ISIS's justification for attacking Medina, it's still Muslims that are being killed, and it's still the second holiest shrine in Islam. As one Muslim tweeted on Tuesday, "Is there anyone on earth who still thinks these barbarians HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH ISLAM?"

They call themselves "Islamic State". It is silly to think they have nothing to do with Islam. For any given IS member the odds are the only book he owns or reads is the Koran. The Koran teaches that it is right to have Jihad against Infidels. Killing Infidels is part of Islam. The interesting thing is that while we think all Muslims are part of Islam the different factions think they are the one true Islam and they group all the other factions in the "Infidel" category, and so killable. The different factions do not think they are "killing Muslims", they think they are "killing infidels".

Many Muslims, including IS faction, think that any idolatry is evil. A "structure over a grave" counts as an Idol. Worshiping at any shrine is viewed as evil. Destroying "idols" is very much part of Islamic tradition, including shrines and idols of other Muslim factions.

From Wikipedia, "Islam strongly prohibits all form of idolatry, which is part of the sin of shirk (Arabic: شرك‎‎). According to one conservative Islamic source (Islamqa), sharia law "indicates that it is obligatory to destroy idols".[15]"

This Is What "American Justice" Has Become http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-07-0 ... tice-looks

"What difference does it make?"

If laws are not applied equally, why should "little people" abide by the law?

Causes of the French Revolution https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Causes_of ... Revolution

The Revolutionary Situation
The essence of the revolutionary situation which existed in France in the 1780s was the bankruptcy of the King, and hence the State. This economic crisis was due to the rapidly increasing costs of government and to the overwhelming costs incurred by fighting two major wars: the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War.[1] These costs could not be met from the usual sources of state revenue. Since the 1770s, several attempts by different ministers to introduce financial stability had failed.[2] The taxation system was burdensome upon the middle class and the more prosperous peasants, given that the nobles were largely able to exempt themselves from it. As a result, there was "an insistent demand" for reform of these abuses of privilege, for an equitable means of taxation and for improved government processes.
