The White House is crafting a Middle East strategy for the remaining 18 months of President Barack Obama’s term...
What calendar comprises of 18 months from 4/2016 until 1/2017?? Maybe WSJ finally publicizes article written last summer.

The WSJ article that I was quoting was from July of last year (7/2015).

Couldn't the rise of fracking and alternative energy explain Obama's lack of regard for the Arab oil states and Russia? A lot of people keep talking about the move away from fossil fuels. Perhaps these countries no longer really matter that much.

Was Obama's father a Shia? He seems to be favoring them.

John - what involvement do you think there would be, if any, by South America in a clash of civilizations war and who would they align with? Also, what are your thoughts on alliances by African countries?

Obama's father was a Sunni Muslim. He renounced Islam and
converted to Christianity, and so Obama became a Christian
at that time.

Each country would have to be researched individually, examining
long-term historical trends. I don't have the time to do that, but
feel free to pick a country of interest to you and do your own
research. If you do, please post your results on this forum.

Thanks for the response, and I'll try and do that. Generally speaking, it looks like Russia and China are both actively investing in and working to create/strengthen alliances with various South American and African countries, Venezuela and Egypt for example.

Alliances are a good place to look, but they can be deceiving. For
example, Russia and China have been making a lot of deals, but they
Russians and Chinese hate each other. Same with China and India. A
good place to start is to look at the relations between countries in
WW II, or in the last crisis war, and then trace how they've evolved
since then.
