Good read! Don't agree with everything you say but enjoy them nonetheless. I still think a Cold War with China being isolated to death is the most likely outcome not a hot war at all. But I believe the battle lines will be the same as you describe.

If China wants Tiawan, it knows it needs to thwart US defense of Tiawan. Command of the South China Sea cuts off sea routes, but China also needs to preemptively strike US bases in Okinawa, Japan, and Guam to prevent an effective air defense of Taiwan.
President Obama's actions indicate he favors Islam in general and is reluctant to do anything significant toward solving Middle East problems, but what is his temperament toward the Chinese?

I am reading the speculative opinions re: war between US and China.
Neither nation stands alone in any conflict, and it seems likely
that there will be, and are, alliances being made even now.
The countries bordering the South China Sea have a heavy Asian
population. Right now, these "poor" countries can look to China
to improve their interests in trade, as China has not declared its
agenda to overtake them in an invasion. Please remember, the
Orientals by characteristic and historic affinities, are " A
tractable people, easily led." Why do we (US agenda) always
think of war to create our hegemonic "right to rule"?
One should go deeper into the history of the first united China.
Sun Tzu was a philosopher, who created the agenda for the
first rulership as well as war (with Shang Yang) strategy, called
"faschia". Yes, very much like fascism. At the same time, the
teachings of Confucious, Lao Tzu, and others (all from the
same region) were influencing the people, as now.
It is said of the Chinese, by the British colonists as well. that
no matter what "ism" may attach to them, they will always be
Chinese."
Just as our "leadership" has failed to understand the culture
and beliefs of the Middle Eastern peoples, so we remain as
ignorant of the Chinese. And, they have four thousand years
of civilization on us, my brothers.
Self-discipline is a good place to start.

An Australian military analysis recently pointed out that China's fortification of the South China Sea is a strategic error. It will turn the sea into a turkey shoot for their navy as they are locked into supplying the island military bases, much like the Mediterranean in WW2. They will have to expend a large amount of their military land, sea and air forces in an attempt to defend the indefensible. And worse, it will block all their trade routes.
Also it is hard to put too much stock in Russian/Chinese claims of military technological superiority. We love to berate ourselves in the West these days, while they love to talk it up. Things are not as bad as they seem, and even Australia has finally woken up and massively increased its defence budget for much needed subs, ships and drones (although they will probably come too late). We are also dramatically increasing our domestic US military presence to improve the global strategic situation. Incidentally, If I were a New Zealander I would be utterly ashamed of my government and its dereliction of its core responsibility in defence.

I'm not sure what Asian nations you're referring to, but China isAmbience wrote: > I am reading the speculative opinions re: war between US and

close to war with several of them -- Vietnam, Philippines, Japan,
India, for a start. The implication that because they're all
"Orientals" then they won't want to go to war with each other is the
opposite of what happens. The bloodiest, most horrific generational
crisis wars are between similar countries, just as the bloodiest, most
horrific crimes by individual people are between husbands and wives or
between close family members. "Familiarity breeds contempt."
Once again, I don't know what you're referring to. When the USAmbience wrote: > Why do we (US agenda) always think of war to create our hegemonic

intervenes militarily since WW II, it's not to "rule" the region or to
annex it -- it's to bring peace to the region.
It's China and Russia today that are invading other countries'
territories in order to annex them, as Hitler did, leading to WW II.

to defending their artificial islands remains to be seen
I think you're right about China facing increased military
capabilities from Australia and other countries. Japan has recently
reinterpreted the "defense-only" clause of its constitution to permit
"collective self-defense," which would permit foreign wars. The
Philippines has invited the US Navy back to its Subic Bay naval base
after throwing us out in the 1990s. Vietnam and India are preparing
for war with China. Basically, China is scaring the crap out of
everyone in the region, and they're all beefing up their militaries to
prepare for war.

Hi, this is pretty ignorant of the realities on the ground - my wife is Philipino and I have lived in Japan and HK and all those nations would side with the US in the blink of an eye against China. Yes even HK though it will never get the chance.Ambience wrote: "a bunch of stuff about Asians sticking together and Sun Tzu
Sun Tzu is also irrelevant to the modern military thinking. If China follows his military dictums they are doomed to failure. 85% of China's history involves foreign rule by usually smaller and less sophisticated militaries. Sun Tzu didn't help there at all.

If China's potential enemies are wising up and beginning to arm, could this tempt China to "do it now"?
