There was a massive uprising of the 400,000 mostly Sunni citizens of Hama against Syria's president Hafez Assad, the current president's father. In February, 1982, Assad turned the town to rubble, 40,000 deaths and 100,000 expelled.

Wikipedia says 7,000 to 40,000 deaths with 1,000 of those dead from government forces. The first 70 people who were killed were on the government's side.

" Mosque loudspeakers used for the call to prayer called for jihad against the Ba'ath, and hundreds of Islamic insurgents rose to attack the homes of government officials and Baath Party leaders, overrun police posts and ransack armories. By daybreak of the morning of 3 February some 70 leading Ba'athists had been killed and the Islamist insurgents and other opposition activists proclaimed Hama a "liberated city", urging Syrians to rise up against the "infidel"."

It says, "Before the attack, the Syrian government called for the city's surrender and warned that anyone remaining in the city would be considered a rebel. "

These Sunni's hoped that other cities would also declare Jihad against the government but after this response from the government they did not.

Islamists think they should take over countries. This is currently the cause of much of the fighting all around the world. Not saying the leaders of Syria are nice guys, but they are not the only ones fighting Islamists. Normal these days is for Islamists to be on one or both sides of a conflict.

It seems that Turkey has been helping ISIS and other Islamists. ISIS has been selling oil someplace and Turkey seems the best bet. Saying "our co-religionists in Syria" really makes it sound like he stands with them. Got to wonder if Russia and Turkey could start off the big war.
