Is it expected that the US will support turkey or Russia?

The US has in the past consistently supported Russia over Turkey since WWI. It is perhaps significant, however, that WWI was a crisis war at least for Turkey and that the US, Russia, and Turkey are all now in crisis eras.

Turkey is a member of NATO and long term ally of the US. However, Turkey and the US have so far largely failed or refused to cooperate in the Syrian war. So if this escalates is the US likely to lend military support, make noise of support without doing anything, try to maintain neutrality, or oppose Turkey?

John has been making the prediction that the US will ultimately side with Russia over the Sunni countries like Turkey. How does this situation play into that?
