It seems Obama is so afraid of hurting civilians that the US military is unable to do much against ISIS and ISIS is able to kill many civilians:John wrote:It's hard for me to see how the status quo is going to continue much longer.

If I were China, I would want to make whatever move I was going to make while Obama was still commander in chief. So between now and Jan 2017 seems like the time for action by China. And it does seem like they are moving fast.
I expect China to do more and more drilling for oil and island building and not letting anyone else drill for oil in the South China Sea. Islands will be more and more fortified. By the time the new Commander in Chief is sworn in, US ships will be no match for what China has on these islands. US ships may keep going back and forth across the South China Sea, and maybe China lets them or maybe eventually it sinks some. I expect China to seize fishing boats from other countries and have their own boats fishing the whole sea. I don't expect Obama to really take any action.
Interesting times for sure.
China could setup air defense zones using these islands:
