About the only major mistake I can recall you making is mentioning that back in 2011 and 2012, you were expecting the Syrian war to fizzle out. Instead, about 300,000 are dead, and the country is in utter rain. Other than that, you've been pretty accurate.

If I had been more careful about how I worded it, I would have done
better. The correct prediction was that the Syrian civil war would
fizzle out, and what's happening today does not resemble a civil war
in any way, so it really has fizzled out.

It is unfair of me to post this here but since I am too lazy to create an account here is an interesting article on China:

http://www.lowyinterpreter.org/post/201 ... 721168328&

I only include it since events is the Middle east have overshadowed what is happening in the Far East, where China is setting up the AIIB, and US partners flocking to be founding members.

Then I saw this one which is also interesting:

Well to continue my hijacked motif I found these interesting including an article on the US slowing troop pullout from Afghanistan.

China selling 8 submarines to Pakistan to “to address force imbalance with India”

US is sending stealth destroyers into the Pacific. I have a real feeling that US carrier power in the Pacific will be quickly neutralized (sorry Japan).

Japan did not join AIIB :
“Many American officials appear concerned that the new lender will undermine the World Bank and also the International Monetary Fund, two pillars of the global financial order established by the United States after World War II.
...Tokyo has compelling security-related reasons for siding with the United States. Foremost among these is an intensified confrontation with China over control of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea that are claimed by both nations.
Eager to ensure that his nation has American backing in the standoff, Mr. Abe has tried to bind Japan more closely than ever to the United States, its postwar military protector.”

So added up all post WWII structures put in place to prevent WWIII and repeat of 1929 (Glass Steagall) are being or have been dismantled/subverted. Interesting to watch the line up happening minus Russia. Everything else is going so "well" that I am sure “soon” something will happen so that Russia and US will play nice.

To John:
Pakistan is officially a sectarian state, but it's 80% Sunni Muslim, and has a history of supporting the Sunnis in the Mideast. Pakistani troops fought in the 1967 Six-Day War between the Arab states and Israel, and the army also came to Saudi Arabia’s aid in 1969 when South Yemen invaded part of the kingdom.
The allegation from The Guardian of an Yemeni invasion of Saudi Arabia in 1969 seems unsubstantiated. There is no sign South Yemen invaded another country ever. What seemed to have happened is infiltrations in the KSA of would-be revolutionaries from the two Yemens (or perhaps only North Yemen) in the mid-1960's. It seems to have been unimportant.

I googled "1969 south yemen invades saudi arabia" and was led to a
Wikipedia article describing: "The al-Wadiah War was a military
conflict which broke out on 27 November 1969 between Saudi Arabia and
the People's Republic of South Yemen after PRSY forces seized the town
of al-Wadiah on the PRSY-Saudi Arabian border. The conflict ended on 6
December when Saudi forces retook al-Wadiah."

I note that it couldn't have been much of a "war" or "invasion," given
that it lasted less than 10 days. Also, the article doesn't mention
Pakistan, which would hardly have had time to supply troops during the
few days that the "war" took place.
