Happy new year! May you continue to keep this site running. It's one of the only places on the internet where I can actually find out what the hell is going on in the world without some sort of ideological bias, even if I have certain disagreements.

John, don't write off Ebola just yet. Certainly most of the initial furor has past, but the jeopardy is not finished until the last patient is virus free for 8-10 weeks. Currently the media sees Ebola as old news, and well it may be, but any pathogen with a > 50% mortality rate must command an ongoing concern.

Your outline of the jeopardy presented by war and poverty still holds. Anywbere that medical facilities are marginal presents an ongoing risk of pandemic - perhaps it's not Ebola this time, but certainly a future event or pathogen is coming. While the world apparently came to it's senses regarding Ebola, the ultimate Ebola outcome is not yet completely clear until the last patient is virus free.

What is clear is that we are now in a period of great instability. Happy New Year?

What about Russia? The Ukrainian crisis is not yet over and with the formation of the Eurasian Union I doubt things will calm down over there for a while.
Other than that I agree with all your points although I feel it is important to mention that the US is also seemingly building up for a war with China which will only make tensions worse.
