I'm kind of interested to see who's going to side with who. Saudi Arabia and Iran are clearly going to be enemies, but I'm not sure about the others, although I think Turkey will be Iran's enemy as well.

Even if we want to think otherwise, ISIS is not going to be beaten by air power alone, something every commander has warned is the case. However, it's politically popular, so air power alone is what we're going to stick to, at least for the time being. Even if it looks good on paper, our strikes have been little more than pinpricks so far. We've launched about 300 sorties against them in Iraq and Syria. For comparison, we launched nearly 25,000 against Qaddafi in Libya.

At least in my opinion, a symbolic action is even worse than doing nothing. It sends a message to potential recruits that the West can be beaten, emboldening more terrorists from around the world to join in. ISIS tripled in size over the course of a few months, and I've been reading from numerous sites that even the 30,000 members that the CIA is currently stating is likely to be an underestimate.

There's no question that everything over there is a mess, and Obama's
Mideast policy, which can be characterized as "I'm invading Iraq but
I'm not Bush," is sending mixed signals and making things worse.

Define boots on ground, maybe I can tell you about boots on ground. But we've never NOT had boots on ground in the "popular" definition.

John, I know you remember the days when encryption was considered a "secret" resource - which was very silly, but makes my point. You couldn't export a system with encryption the US govt could not break (not that anyone ever breaks encryption, it's WAY easier to attack the subsystems and get them to do the work for you).

So consider ITAR - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internatio ... egulations

Now, I have to be retrained in that every year, because I carry around stuff I can't even fly to some countries without turning it in. It's a PITA, frankly. NONE of that stuff regarding laser dot guidance or night vision or ANY OTHER intelligence gathering resource can be turned over to a third country national -IOW, Iraqi's are not handling this equipment.

Taking that into consideration, you tell me about "boots on ground", eh?
