Re: 1-Apr-14 WV-Russia demands 'federal model' for Ukraine
Frankly, I doubt there are more than a couple of politicians in DC that think there is any chance for peace in the MidEast. But they certainly do pretend there is. Basically, there are two groups in the Israel/Palestine conflict that don't want peace, Jewish zealots that believe "God wants Jews to claim every scrap of land a Jew ever walked on before the Diaspora" and the Palestine natives who don't want any Jews anywhere. While this isn't all Jews or all of the Palestinians, it's more than enough to prevent any sort of peace. Add to that the fact that any sort of Palestinian return of any kind, even to the point of requiring them to buy citizenship in Israel will mean for a certainty that Israel would no longer be a Jewish state even in name, and there is not and can be no peace, short of an apartheid state where those not Jews are not permitted to vote. And the politicians in DC know this. The whole "peace process" is just a show.
I think there are a great many in Europe who are remembering grandfather stories about how they lost everything when Russia nationalized industry in 1920. Putin seems to have assumed this was forgotten. Not even close.
