But on Saturday, Russia's president demanded and got approval from Russia's parliament for those troops to invade Ukraine's Crimea peninsula.

New York Times wrote:In Moscow, Mr. Putin convened the upper house of Parliament to grant him authority to use force to protect Russian citizens and soldiers not only in Crimea but throughout Ukraine. Both actions — military and parliamentary — were a direct rebuff to President Obama, who on Friday pointedly warned Russia to respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Like many of the talking heads and print analysts, John is confusing a legal authorization by the Russian Parliament to use the Russian Armed Forces in all of Ukraine, in the future, with the use of Russian Armed Forces in the tiny Ukrainian province of the Crimean Peninsula, which took place before the authorization was even requested. As the New York Times article points out, the legal authorization was to use, in the future, Russian Armed Forces in the entire country of Ukraine, wherever Russian citizens or their compatriots or Russian troops felt threatened.

Curious that you'd mention both modern nursing and the Charge of the Light Brigade, when my wife was asking me about the Russian movements in the Crimea, those were the examples I used to bring the Crimean War back to her thinking.

Not sure what the US or NATO can do really, this would be the tail of a very long supply chain, with Russia next door to their forces. Fighting Russia in the Crimea is the very definition of the unwinnable war.
