Ukraine is a bigger deal to Russia and the other neighbor sharing a huge land border with The Ukraine, Belarus, than it is to Western Europe and the United States. It is not yet known how this will turn out.

It seems like things have gone sideways for the Russians-but wait. I find it hard to believe the Russians will just retreat with their tail between their legs. I'm waiting for a "spontaneous" eruption of civic voices demanding the establishment of a "free Crimea" followed by thousands of heavily armed "volunteers" pouring across the border from Russia.

This is what happened in Kosova in early 1999. Serb forces fell back and then the JNA rolled in and began a horrific campaign of mass rape and mass murder against the civilian population. I'm waiting for that to happen here. I hope it doesn't, but I can't believe the Russians (with or without Putin) would let it all go so easily.
