The recent comments by USAF Gen. “Hawk” Carlisle noted in John's article might be considered in the context of his past statements.

Carlisle is on record as having two divergent perceptions:

1. The first of these views being: only the cooperative Chinese effort – in concert with American pressure – can present the power necessary to impose restraint upon the rattle-ass, apparently uncontrollable, North Korean nuclear armed regime of the unpredictable, and in-experienced Kim Jung Un. In an article dated 12/5/2013, it is interesting to see that Gen. Carlisle specifically notes American actions only in the context of America's five Far Eastern allies – Austraila, Japan, Philippines, South Korea, and Thailand. Notable by their omission in his statements are: New Zealand, Malaysia, Taiwan, Indonesia, and India- http://www.defensemedianetwork.com/stor ... ir-forces/

2. His second view considers the aggressive Chinese actions in the South China Sea. His views are a combination of Cold War philosophy, of force rotation into and out of the limited 9 USAF facilities in the Far East to counter Chinese aggressive actions, and ally coordination. – in this article - by Bill Gertz, on 8/28/2013, a long time accomplished reporter covering defense issues - two air bases are noted, one in Malaya, the second in India, both not part of any American alliance - http://www.defensemedianetwork.com/stor ... ir-forces/.

While in prior years the 9 USAF Far Eastern facilities might have proved adequate. Can this, however, any longer be considered to be the case? In the context of the two each operational Chinese “boomer” missile submarines; each sub capable of launching 12 nuclear armed Chinese missiles, with three additional missile sub units either in production, or planned for production. Until, and unless Chinese submarine stability can be assured, there must be a serious concern with this significant turn of strategic Asian events. The question that arises is: can the US simply “cookie cut” what worked in the Soviet Cold War, and use it, unmodified against an adversary that it has no history with control of this type of weapon system, i.e. who controls these boats; the targeting, and the launch of the missiles that they carry? In this context the 9 USAF facilities must be considered, at best vulnerable, and at worst inadequate for a strategically changed condition. All of the intrusion detection in these 9 USAF facilities would ,in the past, normally be expected to be directed toward mainland China; in the light of these two submarines and their nuke delivery capability, all intrusion detection must be expanded to cover a complete 360 degrees of coverage 24/7 with only moments of expected coordinated attack warning. It is a change in response philosophy from: “... we have time to respond...” to a short fuse: “... use it, or lose it, determined by moments....”

The disconcerting aspect of the General's comments is that they appear to be directed, not at the aggressor (the Chinese), but rather at the potential resistance of the victim (the Japanese) – much as Chamberlain directed his effort not at Hitler and Germany who he could not effect, but rather Chamberlain chose to direct his efforts at Czechoslovakia who he chose to sacrifice. Now having just said that, it must be admitted that the Japanese are taking great pressure at Abe's having visited the Japanese WWII memorial. Accepting that the Japanese barbarity in WWII is well known, and understood; and as bad as the monstrous conduct of the Japanese in WWII in China was, it doesn't even approach the level of cruel barbarity subsequently self-inflicted and experienced by China under Mao; the fact of which has apparently caused the Chinese to developed a significant case of acute amnesia.

Additionally, it is unclear what part the Stalin-like purge of American command level General officers in 2013 - http://www.frontpagemag.com/2013/dgreen ... -generals/ - taken by the Obama administration, has had on this General's comments, and opinions – a military purge unprecedented since the end of WWII; an action taken by a President with no military experience of any sort.

In any case, there are two pertinent questions: 1.) What does this General really believe; and 2.) are we doing what is necessary, or what is convenient in Asia?

I don't think anyone in the Obama administration knows what to do or how to handle any situation. I think we're in big trouble.
