The immediate, and adolescent response to the question: "Can Ban Ki-moon save the U.N.?" is who cares? But in spite of the almost continual practice of poking the U.S. in the eye with a stick, not the least of which is the climate change idiocy, the U.N., once examined in detail, has been the vehicle for much to be lauded. It provides a continuous diplomatic presence in the continental U.S. for consensus building when the WH is occupied by someone who understands that part in international policy making; it has orchestrated the eradication of small pox - in nature, as opposed to the, as yet to be destroyed, genetically modified weaponized version of the virus. The U.N. operates, and has operated for decades, on going polio vaccination programs in areas where the unvaccinated would simply die once the virus was contracted. It created many programs for obtaining clean water, and appropriate waste disposal, in areas that have never enjoyed clean water, throughout the third world. The U.N. has been directly responsible for quarantining numerous epidemic outbreaks throughout the third world, thus containing those epidemics, and much more good. Though not without fault, it has placed "peace-keepers" successfully quietly serving in many areas of the world where intransigent adversaries simply cannot continence each other - though not without difficulty.

Juxtapose this good with the gross incompetence of the General Assembly, and the often virtual evil of the operations of the Security Council; and the incredible choices to lead some of the U.N.'s committees, in concert with the recent use of the U.N. platform for a world wide distribution of anti American totalitarian, and anti-semetic propaganda and I must still come the a conclusion that the good, with the corresponding good of having saved large numbers of lives over decades, warrants keeping a functional U.N. in place. So how is the U.N. to be saved?

The strangeness of the suggestion will only be matched by it's effectiveness. Operate outside of the U.N. When circumstances render the U.N. impotent, and are warranted operate in an extra-U.N. manner. Even in this regard the U.N. provides the broad diplomatic presence necessary to build an extra-U.N. international coalition - presuming that one has not already poisoned the water - in addition to providing the limiting U.N. function of Security Council against those who do not wish us well. The current difficulty is that we simply don't have anyone with the intellectual depth necessary to use and bring that into effect. We, unfortunately, have a group of people running the American government, who are continuously screaming: "... hooorrraahh for us, hooorrraahh for us...." Over the last five years they have gone out of our way to slight, and alienate our closest alies - the British public, the Pols, the Germans, et al. They believe that politics consists of: "...we win, and you lose...." They have left the U.S. in a position of having no one willing to form a coalition with us. Strong arm enough people and you may immediately get your way; but you may be assured that they will indeed wait for you - and that is Obama's present position, and unfortunately our position also.
