Whatever the specific reasons may be, Xers don't know how to hire. Xers don't know how to do anything (big picture management-wise). In my experience, Boomers/Silents did know how to hire. I can never recall questioning a Boomer/Silent hiring decision.

However, the fundamental problem I see with Gen X managers that I don't see with Boomer managers is: Gen X managers don't know how to do anything. And that is true dysfunctionality at its core.

But the main point I want to convey: When the Silents had work they wanted done, they knew exactly what they wanted done, where to find a person they thought could get it done, and if there was something you didn't know that didn't matter because they knew or had people on hand to direct.

To give an example, Freshman year of college, I was put into a triple room with a couple idiots. I switched rooms with another guy but sort of remained friends with the idiots. We had a habit of walking into each others rooms if the doors were unlocked. So I walked into his room one evening (my old room) and with the door unlocked he was going down on his girlfriend and I was, like, oh, hey, I just came by to talk about the Chemistry exam. He said something like, oh, yeah, I'll stop by when I'm done here. So about 45 mintues later he walked into my room with a stupid grin on his face and said now we can talk about that Chemistry test. At the time that was the environment I found myself in and it was only later that I began to put 2 and 2 together and try to figure out how the hell something like that became "normal" behavior to my peer group.

Onto the new roommates, one of them would get so drunk that I'd frequently wake up at night to hear him choking on his vomit, so that wasn't much improvement, but some.

This was at one of the best universities in the world. My peer group was decrepit but they had some help getting into that state at such an early age. I'm just hitting a couple highlights, but could go on and on.

Regarding hiring, Gen X thinks if they screen enough resumes for the key words in the job description through some idiotic anonymous process that the right people will come to them and they won't have to do anything. That's not how it works. The Heros and Silents knew they had to find the right people and they kept their eyes open. Recall Ross Perot's story about how he got hired at IBM.

Gen X keeps their eyes closed. Regarding the current head and neck cancer epidemic among Gen X men, 30 years ago Gen X thought it was normal behavior to close their eyes and bury their faces in multiple vaginas, as my anecdote and the above link from NBC discuss using more pleasant language. But anytime Gen X gets caught with the consequences of their actions, all you hear are excuses:
